Watts 009-MZ RP back flow preventer....can it be installed vertically?

Re-piping plumbing around new boilers, existing 009-mz was installed horizontally,
Things would be simpler if I could re-install this in the vertical position....is that permitted for this model?

If not do you know why? One thing I can think of is if it discharges, the water would go straight down...if vertical it would shoot against the boiler room brick wall near the floor drain.

I found an elbow whose purpose seems to be to allow it: https://www.consolidatedsupply.com/Product/139467

I saw a comment from a customer service rep that the 3/4" model must be horizontal.

I asked 3 different people from the utility and got yes, no and maybe...not sure.

Why would they sell the drain elbow approved for the 009 series if it could not be vertical?

    Paul, thanks for your input.

Vertical if flow is downward is what I’ve been told on double checks with vents. The tech or installation manual may say?

I love looking through manuals for hidden information, and I couldn't find anything about orientation no matter how hard I looked. A supplyhouse customer service rep linked to a pdf that supposedly mentioned it, but the link was broken.

The I&O manuals do NOT state "Horizontal Installation Only!"
Pictures are of horizontal but no direction given for orientation.

It wouldn't bother me to see it either way... just so long as if it did drain, it didn't drain on something valuable...

I feel if one asked the Watts dept. about the direction there would not be a definitive answer.

If they would approve vertical and the device shot water out, it could do more damage than if the water went straight down to the floor.

....."Your device sprayed water on my Monet Painting".... :'(

I am going to go for the vertical installation, the drain port is pointing towards a brick basement wall near the floor drain.

When I get the pictures up you can see why the vertical was preferred.

Any reason the drain can't be piped down to the floor??

    The answer is quite simple.

    Yes.

Have installed more horizontally, but vertical installation is also permitted and does not affect performance.

There is a type of elbow that can be installed with a vertical orientation as needed, but I have seen many installed with and without the ell. The ell installed looks better/more professional.

@JUGHNE Install it with confidence as you see fit.

Call Watts tech support. Some models can be under some conditions, best to check with the Manufacturer
