Hi all. Can someone please tell me what this is and does? 
4 story building. Originally coal fired.
Now on geothermal heat.

    Was this originally steam? Because my first thought would be a plain vanilla steam trap...

    That's right- it's a thermostatic steam trap, probably installed to vent a steam main. Looks like a Webster 502 or 512. Where is this building located?

    No it has been  turned into hot water.

    Is the piping, that this trap is, on still used for hot water?
    Does this trap get hot?

    Can you show us the new hot water boiler and how the steamer is capped off?
