What size is this?

Does any long timers recognize this model number and can tell me the size?

The load calc for this home is 32,323 btu and I think this is a 3 ton, but I want to be sure. I will be replacing system with 3 Ton but I want to know if this is a 3 ton or larger? This way I can inform the customer of the difference he may experience with having the proper size. Better humidity control and longer recovery time on start up and the like.

Better to let them know what to expect in the beginning then to try to explain after the fact. From what I see here I can guess that this is a 9.? SEER unit from 1988ish. Because the logo on the fan housing has 90 on the sticker and the serial number has 88 in the date code area. Also the minimum 10 seer was established in 1992. That is why I’m looking for a “long-timer”.

Son did not get that info. I teach him everything I know and still, he don't know nothing!

I hope the 63 in the third and fourth position does not mean 5 ton or the -5- for that matter

Back that old I believe a 5 ton would need at least a 40 amp circuit or more. I'm hoping for 3-ton!

    Seems like an odd size.

Not exactly looking for a guess. Hoping that an old-timer might have used this brand back in the late 80's

My trouble is that I never used that brand or worked on that brand and I don't recognize the label or what brand this is.

This does not look like Lennox numbers, however just to show some illogical coding......a Lennox 41 is 3 tons.....46 is 3.5 tons....a 26 is two tons. From 1980 Lennox service info book.

Any ID on the inside coil or air handler?

According to the rating plate it draws about 4 kw. It is likely to have an EER between 6 and 8 or so. That would get you around 3 tons.

The problem is he needs to know what it actually is.

@EdTheHeaterMan wouldn't it be safer to go there and do a quick heat gain?

It could be 2.5 ton or 3.5 ton, but it probably isn't 2 ton or 4 ton. Absent of the compressor model or the manufacturer's catalog which would tell you everything, that is probably the best you can do. The metal ratings plate makes me think it is a bit older than 1988. The actual capacity will vary a bit depending on actual site conditions anyhow.

He did a heat gain, he just wants to tell the owner how performance may differ from the current system.

That looks like an old Sears unit. Their model numbers made no sense as far the size.

If I could find my old Carrier Blue book, I could probably ID it.

My guess was Sears or Westinghouse. Manufactures often used a 40K BTU compressor on there 3ton models in the 1970's

Thanks everyone for your assistance. We have settled on a 3 ton system. And I believe the old system is not far from three or 3.5 tons

Sizing by the old unit is never a good idea. Several on line programs available to determine the proper size!

It's a good idea if it's sized right.

    If.
