I've got plenty of toilet paper and a freezer full of food. We stay clean and are mindful of personal space, zero concern whatsoever for me or mine. In 2 weeks this will be forgotten about and we'll be back on with business as usual. Y'all can choose to be scared, I choose to be logical. If I'm wrong, I guess that'll be my problem but at this point I'm tired of hearing about this media fueled fake epidemic. Yes, it's an unfortunate ordeal and people are dying. More people die from suicide every day than have perishedy from this virus in total- being cautious and being scared are very different things.

If you are wrong, and Have been exposed, it will be the problem of everyone you shared the love with.

Aaaaaandd, this is why most contrators are locked out of three quarters of the businesses in my area.

I am a very good mechanic but I cant fix..............

I have physically been within 100 feet of 7 other people in the past 2 weeks. If somehow I am exposed by the sheer volume of contact, it's 113% impossible for me to pass it on. But cool story

    Nibs--Hap_Hazzard--
Whether it is Airborne or not, is not determined. In Hong Kong, a person who was contagious, living on the 2nd floor and confined to their apartment (quarantine) infected a person on the 10th floor who was also quarantined to their apartment. The thought was that the virus traveled from the 2nd flr to the 10 flr thru the sewer system as an airborne.

Next time you cut into a soil pipe, be sure and wear your hazmat suit.

Groundup--A million people will die of starvation surrounded by rolls of toilet paper. The real problem come after you are infected and recover. You get re-infected again which does happen and your immune sys goes into over drive and creates a Cytokine storm in your body that destroys heart and lung tissue. In other words, your immune sys kills you. How's that for irony.

The best and quickest way thru this is following the advice of the pandemic and CDC experts, call it what it is and all hands on deck.

To have the CDC say one thing and politician say the opposite doesn't help with the solution.

The only thing that has been learned about the Coronavirus is 4 out of 6 people suffer from diarrhea. That means 2 of them enjoy it.

@hot_rod: DFW this weekend processing returning International travelers.

What could go wrong with this approach!!

    Petri dish!

And, could someone explain to me why people are panic buying bottled water? Can't see how the water systems (public or private) are going to stop working?

People are buying/hoarding for confinement possibilities. So rather than worry about essentials to get through a couple weeks. They buy everything that they normally buy in large amounts.

Like 9mm ammunition yup, Cleared out at every possible place to buy it. Along with other calibers.

    Bottled Water
    Tp
    Sanitizer
    Now frozen foods
Now alcohol since JB in Illinois is closing down restaurants, bars etc. and state parks......

Grocery stores have had to pause hours for restocking.

The fines in Italy are 1100 Euros, and 3 months jail if caught on the streets. This is what people here are envisioning taking place.

when do you think the local supply houses will start shutting down?

    I have a small supply of .338 Lapua, @Gordy … don't use 9mm, so I don't have any...

But, being a) well over the "old age" age, however that's defined, and b) having smoked 2 to 3 packs a day (unfiltered) since I was in country getting on for 60 years ago now (I switched to vaping a few years back -- made a big difference in my lung capacity and kept the PTSD at bay, pretty much) I'm pretty well the definition of "high risk". So my family has said OK, you are self-isolating. I'll let you know how it goes... I have plenty to do to keep busy (including bugging all you young fellers >:) )

Some idiot went into a local supermarket here and bought out all of their meat in the meat dept. Why did the store let them do it, and how selfish can you get?

It's very difficult in our society to say "no, you can't buy all that stuff" and make it stick. Which may or may not be a good thing. But I'm sorry to say, @nibs , that people are naturally selfish. Without external correctives -- from their immediate society, religion, government, somewhere -- that is the normal human tendency. But that is a subject for a full course in philosophy, if not a lifetime of contemplation, mistakes, and study -- not the Wall!

Here in my neck of NJ local supply houses are beginning to change their 'normal' operations. One supplier is allowing phoned in orders and deliveries only, no counter sales. I called two nearby suppliers this morning, they said they are still operating 'normally' but expect things will change by the end of the week. Two local reps have informed us that the are shutting down.

We've filed permits in two towns for a total of five jobs in the last month or so. All of the jobs are now completed and everything is up and running. Inspections for these jobs were scheduled for later this week. Yesterday I learned that inspections will be delayed as these construction departments (City Hall) are now shut down. Unfortunately, on the two largest jobs, we do not get paid a dime until inspections are complete. Thankfully, we're in a position (at the moment) that we can wait for the funds until the dust settles.

Not sure what to do with my small crew? We have some commercial work set up that we expect to finish this week, but after Friday we may be forced to shut down. We'll still take care of emergencies, but I doubt there will be too many heating calls this time of year.

I was thinking of trying to schedule preventative maintenance with our customers, but I suspect this may not be a wise decision. Do I really want to expose me and my men to a potential carrier of the virus? Do I really want to expose one of our customers to a potential carrier of the virus? I think staying home with the family may be the answer. On the other hand maybe we can buff and wax the shop along with the fleet...

Jamie Hall--That people are selfish is a God given blessing. The whole Universe is opportunistic. Everyone wants a free lunch. I don't call it selfish, I call it self interest. The big mistake that people make is believing that politicians act contrary to that sentiment and the Hoi Polloi suspend their vigilance.

To those Naysayers out there, regarding the Corona Virus, if everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off and you're calm, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

Lack of preparation leads to panic. How are you preparing in your business for the lag time and shortage of supplies? Dan Holohan posted several days ago a post about shortages the trade is encountering. Expect more.

ScottSecor--It will be like the great Depression. When you went into a restaurant, you had to show your money before ordering. I think one has to ask for upfront money to cover materials and collect on labor after the job is finished regardless of state laws limiting the amount of upfront money. Things will change, you work for one week and get paid. If you aren't paid, you don't show up on Monday. This is where ole Homer sees it heading.

There is a thing called Normalcy Bias. Things tomorrow are going to be the same as today. That's true until it isn't.

ChrisJ--What are you saying? The definitions seem the same to me. Thanks for the support. I think it's one's point of view. If I have and you don't have because you didn't plan and need, then I am selfish. So if you engage in a heating business to earn a profit to support your family, it isn't self interest, you're selfish. That's called Socialism.

All society benefit from the risk that you're taking, your education that allows you to do your job, and your self interest in trying to improve your economic position in life. We all benefit from your selfish self interest.

"Selfish" is a manipulative term to get you to give up your self interest.

I'm not saying anything. I simply gave the definitions of the words you compared.

Some people are selfish, others aren't. Some would give the shirt off their back to help someone.

ChrisJ--Nobody give the shirt off their back without self interest being the motive for that behavior. Some examples: It make me feel good, it's my ticket to Heaven, by being generous to others, others will be generous to me, etc... Notice the self interest there?

"Selfish" is a term of condemnation and used to manipulate you into giving up your self interest to the benefit of another, usually the one applying the term to you.

Self interest benefits "cooperative behavior" in a civilized society and your self interest is benefited by that cooperative behavior.

I remind you of the foundations of this nation and the first Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims for the first 2 yrs in the New World suffered terribly for lack of food. The rule in the colony was each person produces the crops and the production is divided among those in need. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." Every man resented producing for another man's wife and children and little was produced. Scarcity of food followed.

After two years of hardship, the rule was changed and the lots divided up and each produced for themselves. Such abundance ensued because of this self interest that all thrived and a thanksgiving to God for the bounty, occurred.

This same thing occurred in Soviet Russia with the collective farms with identical results.

"Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it."

Selfish/self interest... whatever. Something I learned a long long time ago in a jungle far away: there were two kinds of folks out there. Those who looked out for themselves, and those who had each other's backs -- looked out for their buddies. The latter came home. The former didn't.

    DOL, good buddies.

This is a true test. Will we run towards each other to help? Or at each other? A lot of folks talking about their firearms lately.

As a country, if this doesn't kill us, it will make us stronger.
