The reason their is conflicting opinions is because it's not really that important on the average job. Jobs with really high temperatures and pressures...different story

People use what works for them and on most jobs anything will work. People have their preferences, what their father told them, what their boss or co-worker told them or the brand of dope they used in shop class or trade school.

Chevy, Ford or Dodge they all drive down the same road

Blue monster tape and megaloc dope going on 8 years now no issues. For real big pipe threads, old school lamp wicking and blue block dope. Blue block sucks to clean up though. Lol

I've used Megaloc on steam pipes and on a pressure washer running 2800 PSI on NPT threads.
Single pipe quasi-vapor system. Typical operating pressure 0.14 - 0.43 oz. EcoSteam ES-20 Advanced Control for Residential Steam boilers. Rectorseal Steamaster water treatment

Teflon tape followed by Teflon dope for decades. Why switch?

Isn't Permatex that black thick paint like compound? If so, I know it takes Herculean strength to wrench loose cured fittings. Worse than Leak Lock.

Teflon and Megaloc for me. I used Teflon and Rectorseal for years and just got fed up with the dope oozing out whenever the can got knocked over :)

Megaloc is easier to spread when its colder out , compared to other dopes.

From time to time I'd try to use one or the other. Just Teflon or just dope. Never worked as planned .....

As far as I know alcohol doesn't do anything to PTFE.

I tend toward blue monster ribbon tape and megaloc pipe dope, but did my 4” header with permatex high temp gasket sealer with zero issues.

Like I said, with so many differing opinions on the average job does it matter?
