I donated my collection of early 20th century books that have helped me solve many a problem on old systems. The next generation can now access theses books and not become part changers or "I will try this, I think that this will work"!

    The books that I have read several times in over 43 years have also taught me about one pipe gravity hot water and one pipe steam vacuum assisted among other things.

    One pipe gravity feeds to the top of the building. Then has down feed reverse riser. To feed a radiator, it has two Y fittings with one feeding and the other removing water for a radiator. The Northern Telecom building which was 11 stories tall used this system here. It had a separate building for the large boilers which I don't remember the number. I do remember that they replaced the boilers for copper fin and put pumps. It was a $2million screw up. I consulted on having the boiler room on the roof to use the existing horizontal distribution to the reverse risers. That worked. BTW multiple condensing boilers were used with outdoor reset which was able to micromanage the heat load.
