New Toys

A Testo 330i. No more printers and thermo paper! All done on my iPhone. Pretty cool I must say.

How about a mitten & boot warmer? Just as cool...

Don't you have to leave a copy of the combustion test on site?

    Yep. I email it!

Not sure all inspectors would accept that. Around here, hard copies must be left in the boiler room- manuals, logbook on commercial jobs, combustion test results etc. Printing out the results and leaving them on the job is the way to make sure it actually gets done.

    Speaking of plate warmers—
In 1968, I stayed with a Sikh family in (then called) Bombay.
At mealtimes the food consisted of multiple courses, kept warm on silver trays sitting on a very ornate frame with candles underneath. When I commented on how beautiful it was, my friends mother said she wished she had an electric plate warmer, but they were not sold in India. She said the whole thing had to be washed and polished for each meal by one of their many sevants. I should have made a trade of a couple of electric plate warmers for that magnificent setup.
They were relieved that I ate their delicious food, and did not require separate dishes of “English food”.
A hundred feet away, 10-storey apartments were being constructed. All the scaffolding was bamboo, and the workers carried the concrete up in buckets strapped to their backs!
Air conditioning was by an ancient unbalanced ceiling fan which wobbled above me.—NBC

@nicholas bonham-carter I was in Korea in '69 and spent a week at the transmitter site for some OJT. On the way to that site that was on a good sized hill we went through some interesting sections of Seoul. One block had old buildings with corrugated steel roofing (probably filched from the army after the war) and then you would see a 10-15 story building being put up with bamboo staging. After that week I was on the UN train south to Tageau and then a 26 mile truck ride over mountain roads to the site I was assigned to.

Looking at pictures of Seoul today it's hard to believe it's the same city I drove through almost 50 years ago.

Testo was the first. Just a matter of time before email will be the standard. Technology marches on, oblivious to the whims of officials and bureaucrats. The survival rate of thermo-paper receipts in boiler rooms is miniscule any way...

Well, as long as these "officials and bureaucrats" can fail our jobs for not having combustion test printouts on site, we'll keep printing them out. I'll probably be retired before e-mailed results are accepted here.
