If memory serves the beam power tetrode came out to get around a patent for the pentode.

My memory is wrong sometimes though.

Used to have one of those GE "Super Radios" DC batteries (I think it took like 8 of them) or 120 volt. That could pull in a lot of stations in the old days.

Now it seems like you can't pull in as many stations no matter which radio you use.

Best I ever had was an early 60s Fisher FM-200 with external MPX-60 decoder with a roof yagi on a rotor.

I was able to get perfect stereo from 150 miles away. Along with 102.7, 102.9, 103.5 103.9 104.1 and 104.3.

102.9, 103.9 and 104.1 were unheard of by me.

I'm sure a Fisher FM1000 would have done better but I couldn't afford that.

My furthest for AM was really far. I don't remember how far but it was using a mid 50s Fisher AM/FM tuner.

How about the difference between superheterodyne and just heterodyne receivers.

I wonder what's become of them… somewhere around here I have WWII era portable AM-FM radio. Think Walkman, but dating from about 1940. Tubes, of course — and batteries, including a B for the plate voltage. Also, when I was a young brat, a beautiful Hallicrafters AM/shortwave (I never learned Morse code, so being a "ham" was out!, but I could listen!). Shortwave from all over the world.

Apparently the technical documentation I read back in the day, just described how it worked, not the desire to avoid patent issues.

    Which method works better ?
