Your post title implied you were removing the thermostat circuit board and replacing it with a 5 wire fan capacitor ONLY !!!

" I'm adding a relay unit with C wire to enable a smart thermostat, and one way to do it is pull the board from the Taco and replace it with the relay, but I still need a starting cap. "

OK, so what you wrote the board goes away and an unknown relay is added with a 5 wire fan capacitor.

No transformer original or replacement was mentioned. What would you expect a thermostat that was connected to that situation would do ???

I have know idea what your electrical knowledge and skill level is, and what you wrote made little sense to me and apparently others.

BTW (not that it matters) I've repaired and tested many VFDs, from fractional to over 100 HP, I get how the tech works.

I'm still under the impression only you condone what you did and how you did it.

It's always so nice to have a vastly superior intellect telling us knuckle dragging types how stupid and backwards we are. Thanks, @Jells

This is from another post that @Jells was kind enough to post for others

No advice. I'm ripping out my Carlin fired boiler in part because that damn gun is so unreliable. Goes out of combustion tune at the drop of a hat and it's a bear finding someone able and willing to work on it without charging a small fortune. This fall it was running all sooty and CO spewing.

EDIT: I do have a word of advice, last time mine was locking out in Dec the screen (an upgrade I did) was saying "no flame", so I found a video on how to clean the flame sensor and it solved the problem. But without that diagnostic you're just guessing. But it can't hurt to try! I think this was the one, if not it's the other one by the same guy. Bizarre and lame, with some anti-semitic comments, but it had the info: https://youtu.be/Xk173v28_dQ?si=p3RDmKjJpLmQoK0R

Maybe all that Carlin needs is a 5 wire capacitor. It certainly can't be a problem that our superior intellect member can't resolve on his own. He is just choosing to not to.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

@EdTheHeaterMan Do you really have nothing more constructive to do with your time than dig up months old posts just to crap on me for something none of you even understood, or bothered to understand? This place is turning into shithole.

@Jells You are absolutely right. Now that I'm retired and stuck in this wheelchair I have nothing better to do. Thanks for noticing.

And please avoid profanity. It really ins't necessary

To be absolutely Frank with you I thought your post about the Carlin on the other thread was kind of negative and just wanted to look at your profile to see if you offered other comments like that. It turns out that you have. So I thought I would play a little. Don't be so sensitive.

Yes, it was negative because that **** burner has been making my winters a nightmare for years. Am I not entitled to my personal experiences? People come here for help, not to provide you with a punching bag.

You remind me of how a guy at the plumbing supply counter when I was a 21 year old kid rolled his eyes when I asked for like an "elbow both male and female". "You mean a street elbow?" he sneered, as if he were born knowing it. No one here was familiar with a commonly available capacitor configuration, and yet didn't hesitate to crap all over me for it. Maybe I need to retire this account, if this is the crap that is going to go on.

This might have been a nicer way to state your point:

No advice here — just sharing my experience. I’ve decided to replace my Carlin-fired boiler, largely because the burner has been difficult to live with over time. It seems to fall out of combustion tune very easily, and finding a qualified technician who is both willing to work on it and reasonably priced has been a challenge. This past fall, it was running sooty and producing high CO, which ultimately pushed me toward making a change.

Edit: I will add one helpful note from my own experience. The last time the burner was locking out in December, the display (an upgrade I had installed) indicated “no flame.” After watching a video on cleaning the flame sensor, I tried it myself and that resolved the issue. Without that diagnostic feedback, though, you’re mostly guessing — but cleaning the sensor is an easy step and worth trying. I believe this was the video I used (or another one by the same creator). The presentation is a bit odd, but the technical information was useful.

By the way… i you have a space before a youtube ULR and hit the return key at the end of the ULR the video just pops up like above. When you don't hit the return key and just hit "Post Comment" all you get is this: https://youtu.be/Xk173v28_dQ?si=p3RDmKjJpLmQoK0R

"Maybe I need to retire this account, if this is the crap that is going to go on."

That would be your choice. But if you give cryptic information and end up less than happy with the replies, then perhaps you should help others at the DIY sights that will accept your comments with all the significance they deserve.

And I just looked at all my replies to your post above and was able to understand exactly what you are asking, but you grouped me in with all the others "none of you understand" contributors. as stated here"

I actually explained it to some of the others so they understood what you were doing. What you chose to do is to look at their comments as negative criticism. Not the constructive criticism as it was intended. That is why I shared the Lennox Industries story. You figured it out for your self and insinuated that we were all inferior since we mentioned that you may have selected something that may bite you in the butt in the future. Terms like legal and code and other problems that may never be an issue for you.

Now I can see that you have no sense of humor and I will refrain from poking fun at you. I will add you to my over sensitive list. You will only get constructive comments from me from now on. You may look and see that I am only one of three that has over 1000 LOLs in my badges. I see that you have at least 5 LOLs so maybe you are a little funny from time to time without even trying.
