One unit blowing into the other?

That’s not going to work well!

Right! Hold my beer and watch me turn a 17 seer VRV unit into a 2 seer unit. (not seer 2)

Look they added a little bit of pad, most likely to get the manufacturers minimum separation lol

watch them pour more pad so they can stack more units in there, surely that will fix it!

recently saw a house with two Lenox units located 6” apart. Is capacity reduced linearly; 1/4 airflow blocked = 25% reduction in capacity?

It depends a lot on how the discharge. if they all discharge up it probably is a little bit more than negligible. When they discharge in to each other then it is like the second unit is working in 120 ambient. That will raise the head pressure to raise the delta t enough to be able to transfer the heat to the warmer air.

Funny story: a while ago, when I was a wee li'l electrician, I did a job when the engineer had put some 6-8 condensers in a roof well—with no clearance between them. When that oops came to light, 3-4 had to be relocated to a different roof. We got the RFP, got the change order blessed, did the work, & got the change order paid. Towards the end of the job we got an email from the engineer to the effect that "We were going over this change order & it seems a little high. What are you going to do, lower your price?" I can only imagine that they reached a point where they were going to have to eat the cost. I suggested that we reply "We were going over this change order & it seems a little low, what are you going to do, pay us more?", but I don't think we did.

Maybe install a hybrid water heater close by and set the selection switch to hybrid. That should make up for the installation issue.

    NOT!!!
