This weeks case, the case of the boiler descaler

This case is not really a solve it sort of case. The facilities director was talking with the rep who sells cleaning chemicals. The rep told him about his new product which will descale the boilers. He promised it would make them just like new. The facilities director purchased two gallons and inserted them in the thirty year old boilers. Let's say it didnt work out as planned. The video will post on friday

Oh, I'm sure it worked. It stripped off all the rust & crap that was keeping the water in the boiler.

Or it plugged something up. Hot water or steam??

It ruined both boilers and several hundred feet of pipe. It plugged steam traps, control valves, strainers. The good news is I sold two new boilers.

Set it & forget it? Surprised that corruption escaped boiler.

@jumper They had lots of carryover. The near boiler piping was all wrong.

So sad. With proper treatment & piping both steam & HHW work better as well as live longer. Decades ago I sold & installed sidestream demineralizers. Many prospects declined. Others were so enthusiastic that they logged gas consumption.

Would a water treatment that is not a descaler but more of a buffer, something like Fernox F1, be safe in an old boiler?

@johnshanahan I don't know much about Fernox F1 but yes a less agressive water treatment which stops the erosion and rust would be better. All boilers should have water treatment in my opinion
