    Find out what residential code your city/township/county uses and look in the mechanical section. Look in the general or administration section at the beginning and look go see if there is a boilers section and look in there. You may have to go to a library, some codes are only available if you purchase them.

    Here are some examples from the 2015 michigan residential code:

    The codes pretty much confine themselves to safety, as long as it won't contaminate the domestic water or cause a fire they are happy. Most important;y the inspection shall not interfere with the inspectors tee time!

    I think if you read back through they did call a professional and it turned out that they weren't.
