It is such a shame that the elderly and others should struggle this way.

I don't think he was begging. I think good people saw a need and rose up together to help, expecting nothing in return, and I like that a lot.

It's definitely a good story from the idea that people helped a person. But I see it as a heartbreaking failure that this man didn't have heat, or food, or toilet paper.

I get your point. Nobody should be in that situation. But the way I read it, he didn't beg for anything. All he did was accept gifts from the heart.

This man was surely not begging -- no one would have known, had he not wanted to rent an apartment. There are a lot of folks out there like that -- far more than most people realise. One of my most difficult ministries is to reach these people and provide assistance -- without in any way limiting their freedom, which they value perhaps more than anything else.
