Out here in Colorado where the steam is alittle cooler =D

Built in 1927 this building has 10 apartments. 4 on the 3rd floor, 4 on the 2nd floor and 2 in the basement.
Old boiler's tags read: S 2900. 5 K. New boiler is a 64-08 sized to the EDR and elevation.
This is my first 4inch header, fun stuff. the book called for 2x 2 1/2 risers but i calculated the exiting velocity to be 25-27fps. Upping the size to 3inch risers slowed that down to 16-17fps.

Here's James before we started smashing it to pieces.

Got the new boiler down and as some of you saw, we had a leaky end section.
Peerless has a 1 year parts and labor warranty apparently, so all of the extra labor and headaches will be compensated.
putting the boiler together the second time around was much easier using a gantry, never again will i ignore that thing calling my name.

We had King Squirrely to keep us company on our breaks.. this guy had 2 slices of pizza, a full taco shell and an apple in just one day! and thats only what i spotted.

Here are the end results! When the owner of the building came down and said "It is beautiful," it made all of the hardwork, tired bodies and stress absolutely worth it! Gotta love steam.

I think that was an Ideal Water Tube boiler- one of the better ones available at that time.

Boiler looks great. How about the rest of the system?

I’m working on calculating how many main vents they need. I have roughly 75’ 3.5”main and 25’ 2” dry return

Those old American Radiator boilers were tanks. We just had one let go in a school installed in 1938. Unfortunately we were underbid on the replacement.

The new ones won't last 80 years

The building was also connected to a “central Freon system” described by the owner. Each apartment had a small cooler box recessed in the wall outside of their door, the grocer would come by and put their food in the cooler until the resident got home from work. And below the cooler box was a small box for the mans work boots.
