How come there's never enough money or time to do the maintenance, but always seems to be enough to build something shiny and blingy and new?

So sad. They are clamoring to spend $266,000,000, but unable/unwilling to spend money on repairs. It's seems a universal phenomenon in larger institutions, repair is drudgery and wasteful, but a sexy new shiny building or system is money well spent (and will be maintenance free!!!).

    Progress..

Not for nothing, but this is nothing new.... public school infrastructure has been neglected for decades at this point. It's just finally reached critical mass where the "I told you so's" are now happening and systems are actually failing and beyond repair.

Funny how the superintendents can make $400,000+ and still have all these problems. You would expect exceptional management at $400,000 salary. There is literally no accountability in public education any more.

I suppose boiler chemicals were too expensive. Or it took too much time to make sure it was done correctly....

I was a facilities engineer for a medium sized community college. The maintenance budget was barely even 1% of replacement cost and horrible mismanaged. We didn’t pay the hourly much but they had marginal skills.

When I got there I was the first person in 60 years that told them not to drain the hot water system in summer.

We had to draw a picture to explain to the 20 year veteran VP of Facilities what a chilled water coil was. We used pictures. I described it to my 7 year old daughter that evening and she understood it better. I left and they questioned whether I was really smart or totally full of BS and had no idea what I was doing. They also put up a new building that had so many engineering mistakes that the hvac was barely operable. But the A&E firm walked on water of course. It was pretty.

I argued with them for 10 minutes one time that of the building is super insulated and had LED lights, no sun and lower occupancy that you can’t remove humidity no matter how much you drop the airflow. I don’t know where these guys get degree from.
