Best Cast Iron Boiler

Options

With my recent issues with my existing 30 year old Slant Fin boiler, has me considering if I should replace. At least want to do some research into them when the time comes want to be prepared.

My preference is to stick with an old school cast iron to go with my boiler mate, favoring reliability over efficiency.

What's the best made / most reliable cast iron boiler brand out there nowadays?

Thanks ahead.

Tony

  • Gas or oil? Do you need domestic hot water too?

Weil McLain, Peerless, Utica is about all there is unless you want something made by Burnham.

A lot of the boiler MFGs above sell boilers under other names.

Weil McLain also makes Williamson (same boiler different jacket)

Utica also makes Dunkirk & Pennaco

Burnham makes Force and Crown and New Yorker I think

Any of the above brands and the (rebranded) models are ok.

Stay away from the Burnham Independence though.

    @Toneloc

So you have gas hot water then?

    Well their are other considerations.

Are you venting into an existing chimney? You may or may not need a chimney liner

The best way to size a boiler for hot water is to do a heat loss of the house. Many will size a boiler off of the existing boiler but that may have been sized wrong.

I am partial to Peerless myself but most anything mentioned in the other post is ok for hot water.
