The circulator on my Superior brand boiler is hot but the pipes are cold - would giving the circ a gentle tap help?

The circs get stuck when immobile and a tap will free them but so far hasn’t worked.

It appears that you’ve answered your own question.

Are you sure the circulator is the problem? The system could be air bound.

Also make sure your water pressure is up.

The pump needs a few psi, or it won't move anything.

You need to Carefully check for power to the motor IF YOU are comfortable doing this and see if the motor is spinning. If the motor is hot and the pipes are cold that means you have (or had) power

If the windings are powered up but the impeller isnt spinning, how would you know ?

Seems a clue that a "tap" used to get them working again.

My Grundfos have a bleed screw where you can see the rotor spinning. Not sure what brand circ OP has ?

If it is pumping properly the housing will be a bit warmer than the fluid.

If it is stuck it will get very hot to touch.

In some cases it will boil the fluid in the volute if there is no fluid movement
