Someone thought it funny to disconnect the wires on my furnace. Can't afford a tech, so hoping for guidance here. Thank you in advance for any help.

My guess is someone didn't think it was funny at all and left it off as unsafe to operate. Is that the way it was left? No wire nuts on the hot and neutral coming in? Not the way I would've done it.

Someone was there at some point to service it, correct? Do you remember being told anything as to why its been disconnected?

Is that a Miller downflow? Looks like shiny new screws and tabs for the Igniter and a newer (but still obsolete) R8184G primary. What's really going on over there? How do I know if I show you how to wire it that you'll still be alive tomorrow to tell me it worked, its got a 0 smoke, correct draft, and no, the heat exchanger is definitely not cracked? Can I get your signature on that first?

Yeah I agree. We’re not getting the truth here.

I have disconnected wires on equipment that is unsafe to operate, but it is usually something simple like the thermostat wire on a furnace of the B1 on a boiler. I don't just take all the wire nuts off. That is more work for my guy when he returns to finish up the project.

I would like to see what was written on the service ticket when those wires were disconnected?

There is a red coating on the nozzle assembly where the tube turns from the bulkhead fitting and goes towards the nozzle. Is that a coating from overheating? Also look at the air band… that looks like a lot of soot from back pressure. First thing you need to do is take the entire heat exchanger apart and look for the blockage or the crack in the heat exchanger.

This reminds me of the post about the DIY auto repair where the person wanted to know why his tire was not getting full of air. "I have been putting air in this valve for over 30 minutes and my tire just won't fill up with air. can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? "

Several different posts about what the pressure is the compressor set? Are you using a Bicycle hand pump? and a lot of other helpful comments.

Then someone asked the DIY to take the picture of the car from farther back. This is a different story.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

  • A former friend is the one that did it. Everything worked fine, last season. This 'individual' had a hair across his **** and decided to do this. If I knew how to locate him, this would be fixed on his dime. Each wire was taped individually before I took the pic. I thought it was an easy fix. If I have to, I'll use electric heaters when it gets cold, until I can get someone in here. Just hate leaving a tank of fuel sitting there. I'll try a few more times on my own before I just keep the power of going to it. Thanks for your time.

So why was the former friend touching it in the first place ?

Or they sneaked into your place and vandalized your heating equipment ?

  • They didn't sneak in. I thought I was helping a friend with a place to stay short term, until they overstayed the welcome and were told to leave.

OK, not a good friend. But from the pic you showed, the burner needs professional attention.

Is that a downflow furnace in a mobile home? If so, is it burning kerosene?

Looks like a Miller mobile home furnace to me. If you are really that strapped contact your Oil Company and see if they work with the National Association of Oil and Energy Service Professionals Oil Heat Cares program. They can probably help you out
