On January 19, 2024, 11-month-old Binyomin Kuravsky took his first steps. The next morning he was gone , killed by a sudden steam radiator failure in his Brooklyn bedroom.

I think it's fair to ask what steam pressure they were running.

I would bet my boots, that that the radiator was somewhat elevated from the ground. And that they were supports under the legs on the air vent side and no supports under the legs on the shut-off valve side. Which means that the valve spud was supporting the weight of the radiator. Give it enough time and the spud will crack. I've seen this happen numerous times.

Thanks for the comments and hopefully one of the code agencies will think this is a good idea and include it in their next meetings.

Some of you may know that Ray and I are working with the opposing legal teams handling this tragic case. As far as I know, it's still open and I personally haven't had the opportunity to review the lab results. It's been almost equal parts nauseating and fascinating to me and I've included some of the shareable details in my classes. Most of all, the takeaway to my students is simply that what we do is important, and what's important to do at all is important to do well.

The original bill introduced by the Council member required owners of multiple dwellings to have a licensed master plumber annually inspect all steam radiators in units with children under 6. It was well intentioned, but ill advised, given the cost of hiring a master plumber, the limited number of master plumbers in NYC, the high number of apartments with steam radiators and children under 6, and the rarity of steam radiator fatalities. It can also take many visits to get access to an apartment. Fortunately, the bill was amended to allow supers (among others) to do the inspections.

@JohnNY I was contacted by a local NYC news reporter and asked to speak with the parents to help them through this tragedy. Im not working for a legal team. They asked me for some suggestions for the Ben Z's law. I have tried getting something codified nationwide that requires owners to have dangerous steam radiators repaired. Unfortunately it falls into a grey area. I want to prevent steam radiator accidents that took the lives of Binyomin in 2024 and sisters Ibanez and Scylee Ambrose in 2016

@Reality_Check_TRD I suggested that maintenance staff could do the "inspection" I didnt want to put another expensive new rule for landlords. They deal with enough.
