Compressor not pumping
Hello to all,
I am working on an old ac system that works great when it works, but the compressor intermittently will overheat. Sometimes it works for as long as a week with no problems. One time I had just turned on the unit, and it was working fine and after just a minute or two the compressor started to make a loud grinding noise and stopped pumping. It was 72 degrees out. The amp draw was less when it doesnt work (10) then when it works well (13) The contacter and cap are new and the coil is clean. Voltage is fine.
Any suggestions ??!!

Its just ac. 110psi low side 370 high side, when 80 degrees out. 8 superheat 6 subcool. Its a piston and probably an 8 seer. Amp when working well is 13, when grinding 10. voltage is 238.

R-22 or 410A?

r22 I will need to get m#

110 Suction is too high causing the head pressure to rise.
Throddle it back until stable.

110# suction and 370# discharge on an r22 system? The unit is over charged. Or the condenser coil is filthy and the return air temperature is extremely high.
And I can’t accept 8* superheat and 6* SC with those pressures. It just doesn’t add up.

You can choose to do what you want, but you cannot choose the consequences.0 -
110 psig for r22 is like 65f. are you sure your superheat isn't 0? sounds like it is probably slugging. maybe there are noncondensibles or some of the wrong refrigerant in it?

My mistake. I usually think in temperature, not pressure (which was 38 degrees) when looking at my gauges so i didnt know the pressure off hand and ran to my truck to look at my gauges and I gave the 410 pressure by accident. Pressure was 65psi.
