CROSS OVER STEAM MAIN TO DRY RETURN
Is this where main steam line is vented to the dry return? After nearly 100 years, should the nipple leg be taken off and let come out what may?

is that a capped nipple at the bottom of the right 90, or does that go thru the wall as a wet return?

Yes… but. It is very likely that at one time at the top of that arrangement there was a crossover trap — a simple radiator trap, but connected starting at the steam main with a short nipple up, then a 90 and a nipple to the INLET of the trap, with the outlet of the trap going straight down through a nipple to the dry return. Air went through the trap, and condensate went down the water seal loop and made its way back to the dry return..
