Another Honeywell Heat Generator
For your viewing pleasure- another Honeywell Heat Generator (No2) found in the wild. This one residing in an attic in South Bend, IN.
A contractor in the past converted system over to expansion tanks. The customer asked me if they need this removed or if its fine. Seeing as ive never removed one, I said its been fine sitting there so far. Thoughts? Any dangers yhr mercury could pose if it's still in the heat generator?

It is just a mercury pressure regulator. It will work just under the open expansion tank too but it is usually far more convenient to put it by the boiler.

I have seen those installed in other attics.

Someone with a gravity system may pay some cake for an intact one. Ebay.

easier and better to retrofit it to a prv and expansion tank

That thing is full of mercury. If any of it spills, your house turns into a hazardous waste cleanup site at great expense. This has happened occasionally.

Mine is still active but since this one has already been decommissioned, and in an attic space, I would leave well enough alone. It will not cause any harm. However, if the homeowner does ask you to remove it, make sure not to tip it over or all the mercury inside will spill out and you will have a serious situation on hand. Let the customer know this as well.

Only if you tell.......In this day & age, I'd make the building owner fully aware verbally & in writing of the mercury content & possible hazmat condition. Let THEM get it removed, Professionally by an abatement company. Mad Dog

that is sort of like calling an abatement company to remove a toaster that has asbestos in it instead of just carrying it outside.
or in this case plugging the tapings and carrying it outside.

So, if you're the installer back at the turn of the last century and you want the system to run as hot as possible, do you install the HHM next to the boiler in the basement or up in the attic? I have my answer.
8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour
Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab0 -
i thought the answer was attic when i saw this a couple days ago but now i think it is it doesn't matter because addition is commutative
assuming the tank is in the attic in both cases.
