Mark Honeywell invented the Unique Valve in the early 1900s. It gave him a way of connecting a hot-water radiator at just one side instead of two sides. The Unique valve opened with a quarter turn and used a baffle to direct the water into the radiator. The cooler water flowed by the hot water and entered the Unique valve on the other side of the baffle. In this video excerpt from his Classic Hydronics seminar, Dan Holohan teaches us about the origins of Honeywell’s Unique Valve and shows us how it works:

And you can find the patent here:

Thank you all. I’m guessing that it is no longer available but can the stuffing for the stem be repacked? Has anyone tried and was it successful?

Almost certainly can be repacked. Keep in mind that it's a quarter turn valve…

Does it bypass as well or does it just throttle the flow to the emitter.

Be careful and use correct tools with what you do because it likely is extremely difficult to impossible to find a replacement although there are some modern valves that can also feed from one end.

Where can I find the newer valves?

To do the same thing? I don't think there are any. That valve, however, is eminently repairable.

So there is a bypass in the valve so if the system is piped such that it needs the bypass there is not direct replacement. you would have to replace it with a valve with a lance and a bypass or take the plug out of the other end of the radiator and pipe the return to the other end and a bypass. you may not need the bypass if there are separate supply and return mains. Danfoss and a couple others make a valve with a lance to feed the radiator from one end.

by far your best option is to carefully rebuild the old valve.

The only thing to go bad is the stem packing. Just repack it and call it a day.

Oventrop. They make a single entry radiator valve. Or they used to.

  • Not common, but we even have them here in Berkeley. Truly, a wonderful, simple invention.
