Old gas valve . . .

I need to know if the gas can be shut off using this device that is in the gas line. The line ultimately goes to an old forced air wall unit that is leaking gas. I want to shut down that branch line w/o turning off the gas to the entire house. There is a more obvious on/off valve up stream a ways, yet that valve would also cut off the hot water heater which is relatively new and has no problems. Valve was installed prior to 1969, likely late 60's.

That is a regulator. The upstream valve is the only shutoff. You would have to disassemble some of the pope and cap it, ideally before that regulator since those can leak out the vent if the diaphragm fails. Is the pilot cock off at the appliance?

In NYS & NYC only licensed master plumbers and employees under their direct supervision are allowed to touch natural gas piping, valves, fittings, et al.

The Federal D.O.T. now has an entirely new set of rules and requirements as well, even more stringent. Be careful what you touch If you are neither of the above. Mad Dog

Doesn't the dot only have jurisdiction over things that are being transported?

Optimist. The interpretation in the DOT was that the piping is under their jurisdiction, since it is used to transport gas…

That's what I thought, but with the gas explosions the last few years, the seized control. It's very inconvenient now, even for Licensed Master Plumbers. Mad Dog
