New Boiler Installation

I've finally finished installing my new steam boiler here in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. It is a Weil-McClain SGO-3. It has a used Beckett AFG oil burnerwith a new pump and a GeniSys R7284U 1004. I have yet to install a skimming nipple. Later I will add a low pressure gauge with a low pressure control and also a vacuum gauge on the oil filter.

Next I have to have it inspected following which I will ask one of you fine folks look it over and do the combustion tuning.

    Looks great but I have to hate on that hot water coil! I don't hate the CycleGard though!

    Piping looks good. Did the burner come off another SGO-3? Also, could you have used a single oil line?

    @ethicalpaul Thanks. Yeah, I may someday replace it with a gas fired hot water heater but I didn't want to make a lot of changes at once.

    @Steamhead Thanks. I don't know what system the burner came off of but I made sure it had the correct tube and head for the SGO3. I did put a new nozzle on it. I suppose I could have used a single oil line but the old burner had two lines and I didn't want to make a lot of changes at once. You can see the Roth tank in the photos.

    The biggest problem I had was learning to sweat solder with the new lead-free solders. I couldn't wipe the solder around the joint to make a nice filet like my Dad taught me. Most of the tools I used were inherited from my Grandfather who was a builder in Summit, N.J.. He didn't have any hand held power tools.

    just a pet peeve i usually try to come off the back w the flue instead of the top . also i like to always have a vertical drop on my equalizer and then pipe over to the return horizontally below the water line . its what shown in every installation diagram but its just me and the few peeves i have , i would also throw in a nipple and tee off the skim and install a 3/4 cross tee and pipe the pressuretroll and gauges off that ,they will never get clogged . also remove that front plug and get a full size ball valve to flush the bottom section out usually after a few years there a pia to get out usually have to cut . looks good much better then most i see keep up the good work

    @clammy I might add the low pressure gauge and low pressure control teed off of the skim nipple. Thanks for the tip. Here's the one it replaced.

    For the love of god man what are all those wet spots on the floor!

    Single pipe 392sqft system with an EG-40 rated for 325sqft and it's silent and balanced at all times.

    Everybodies got there pet peeves . Your piping job is a vast improvement over the prior and the system must be heating up considerably better then before being now it getting some dry steam stead of wet . Usually after such a up grade in the piping it’s like a whole new system customers are always amazed at the difference in comfort .

    That poor Peerless never had a chance. That F--ked up copper run crooked like that is more work than to do it right

    @CLamb. Make sure you check those packing nuts on your king valves from time to time especially in the beginning.

    I had to keep adjusting mine for a while until things settled in.   They would go from tight to so loose I could turn them with my fingers.

    The piping reminds me of a vacuum diffusion pump. My guess is that it pumped a lot of water from the boiler into the equalizer but did allow dry steam to go up the mains.

    I haven't fired it up yet. The inspectors are coming on Tuesday and after that I have to schedule someone to come and do the combustion tuning.
