Replaced a burned out element with new and the new one burned out in a couple minutes. Water was at the top of the element for sure. Any ideas of what's up?

Element was not submerged in water or you have the wrong voltage/element0

The water is a dark brown color. Should it be clear?0

As @pedmec said. The element has to be fully submerged (not just "water at the top") before applying power. The other possibility is that you got a 120 volt element and tried to run it on 240 volts...Br. Jamie, osb
