EG35 install

I must start by saying I am not back doing installs, but was talked into doing one for one of my pops best friends. These days pops body is hurting too much to help so I’ve had to recruit my 14 year old to help and he’s doing a pretty good job. Being without my old service van with an abundance of parts and tools has made it challenging but I’m working through it.

We removed an old 4 section Koehler boiler that was working still but after ripping it apart it was starting to leak at the lower portion of the sections and with the price of oil and the possibility of rations it was a no brainer to replace it.

That's a great looking install and I'm sure the owners will be happy with it's performance. It's great your boy was willing to help, he should understand that hard work has it's own rewards, not everybody is suited to office work.

As Mike Rowe said America is running out of people willing to do trades work and we are poorer for it.

Why did you pull the jacket of the new boiler? Does it apply an advantage over piping with the jacket in place? Im asking because I’ve never pulled a jacket on a new boiler (never thought i needed to).

Oh how I have learned to appreciate a well-piped boiler.

During my time in business doing energy audits and retrofit work for 1 to 4 family homes I had my kids join me on a few audits. They seem to enjoy it and hopefully something rubbed off.  They now turn off the lights when they leave rooms but of course they’re older now

I had a young man doing some plumbing work for me, and I chatted with him as he worked. I realized that he was pretty smart, so I asked him why he wasn't an engineer. His reply was "I like working with my hands, and they cannot offshore my job. Smart!

That is a beautiful piping job. I also wondered about pulling the jacket?
Also I have taken the habit of installing a shutoff valve on the steam outlet so I can build pressure and test safeties. Will a ball valve take the heat or stick with a gate valve? What do you guys think about using the valve on the outlet?

I am impressed ,your son if he wants to go into the trade, has someone who actually knows what he is doing to mentor him. I wish every youngster that starts in the trade has a craftsman to learn from not the butchers that pass themselves off as journeymen. I know I am hard on people but it is time for our trade to be treated like a professional endeavour not a place for ignorant know nothings to hide till retirement. I applaud your craftsmanship it is a relief to see things done correctly, teach your son what you know. Cheers Jack

Hi Dave, no I didn’t pull the jacket, Weil McLain still offers their boilers in a knockdown. Everything comes in separate boxes and the bare block. Makes it easier to get the boiler into most old homes.

Very nice piping. I am unfortunately not a fan of Dunkirk steam boilers, but if piped good will work okay.
