Best way to install a device (propress) in an immobile pipe?

To install a device (like a dirtmag) with press connection on a 1'' straight pipe and the pipe happens to be immobile after cutting, is inserting a short piece of pipe into each end of the press then use no-stop coupling the only way?

Not many situations where you can't undo a pump flange or some hangers or both to get the 3/4" or so to slip the fittings together.0

For my case it's either between the DHW tank and an elbow against the wall, or inlet of a LLH and an elbow against the wall. I can probably cut the elbow and rebuild from there but prefer something simpler.
I notice for the Viega union fitting, the part where the two are mated, one goes inside of another by about 1/8'', so should I screw down everything and use that as a guide to cut the pipe? (or leave 1/8'' of wiggle room?)0 -
