I am looking to convert from oil-to-gas for a steam heating system in Norfolk County MA. Any tips on finding someone experienced with installing a gas boiler?

    Did you try the Find a Contractor link on this site yet? Accept no substitutes. You don't just want any old plumber or HVAC tech, you want someone who knows steam systems.

    What is your reason for the change?
    Is your existing boiler failing?
    Are you looking for a lower operating cost?

    You may be disappointed if you are looking for a lower operating cost. If your existing system is properly sized and maintained there will be little or no savings. We don't talk pricing here but know that the replacement cost of a steam boiler, properly installed, will not be recovered in the reduced cost of operating a gas-fired boiler.

    If you need a new boiler anyway... that is different.

    Try @New England SteamWorks. But he's pretty busy. As @EdTheHeaterMan said, though, have a very good reason for switching fuels. If you're thinking LP, you won't save any money at all. If you're thinking natural gas, you may save some money (not enough to pay for the new boiler, though) -- but check with the natural gas people to find out what the schedule is for hooking up new services -- if they are even permitting it in your area.

    We decided to stay with our oil fired steam boiler and not switch over to gas fired because the new ultra low sulfur fuel oil sold in New England is pretty close to natural gas in terms of how clean it burns and natural gas has the environmental problem of leaking methane all along the production and delivery chain. Curious about what made you decide to change.
