Heating Return Manifold Question

My son sent me a pic of his configuration while troubleshooting a zone issue. On a 4 zone config with a common return manifold, there is an extra zone valve installed in the main feed return to the boiler. If you picture a kitchen fork standing upright, the 4 zones would be the tines, the handle the common return. I don’t understand that zones purpose and additionally, its installed with the valve facing the return flow direction. The other 4 are opposite direction.
Give me a clue please.

    Got any pics?

What you're describing makes no sense to me either.

Could you post the photo he sent?

I think that is the zone valve for the indirect water heater but i can't see where it goes from that pic.

I have some questions about pitch and clearances on that vent.

Haven’t seen it first hand yet.
