Hydronic Retrofit

Brian and Dragon’s latest creation. This is a hydronic retrofit in McLean VA. The 1960’s two-story Home was heated by electric baseboard.

We are installing Runtal baseboard sized to heat thechomecatc140* SWT.

We installed radiant floor heat in the kitchen and we will install Runtal towel warmers in the baths.

An NTI trinity running on outdoor reset drives the system.

DHW is provided by two 80 gal electric water heaters. This was chosen over an indirect as the owner is installing 32 pv solar panels on the roof.

    Nice work!

How do you like the NTI? I put one in at a large radiant slab shop. Same SS HX that W-M uses. I liked the ability for BMS interface with a 0-10volt input, but found the touch screen to be difficult to navigate.

I also found it curious that NTI suggests pumping into the HX, with expansion on the return, yet W-M suggests pumping out of the HX with the expansion on the supply. Low head fire tube HX...

    @ Solid_Fuel_Man

We have been using NTI boilers for about 4 years now. Easily 100+ installed. They have proven to be solid and reliable.

I like the touch screen control. I sent my techs through the factory training to learn how to properly program. The more you use it, the easier it gets.

Nice -- I used some Runtal baseboard and towel warmers when I redid my place in Chestnut Hill. Two of the warmers used thermostats and one used a Danfoss head ... like the Buderus panel radiators I used. In my case it was all PEX and manifolds -- so the warmers need a dedicated loop. I wish Runtal made a bypass fitting as they have on the panel radiators .. it would make them easier to install. Having the Danfoss head is easy and quick

How large is the home? That seems like a rather large amount of DHW capacity.

The house is about 5500 sq ft. DHW is oversized to store energy from 32 PV solar panels.

The electric bill from heating that place with electric baseboard must have been scary.

I like manifolding but did you need multiple circulators?
