I am waiting for the "no dropped header' comments to begin. I don't usually use them myself. Not a thing wrong with using them, I just don't like the way they look.

    very nice job

Great looking install, what is the rating on that boiler?

  • While I love you guys, I hate that boiler for steam!

I've tried to fix two of them, and failed. I ran into a third and walked away. But not before noticing something interesting: With the first two I tried to fix, the manual called for a 2-1/2" header. Neither had it (a presumed "aha" expert discovery), so I re-piped both headers in 2-1/2", but they still performed poorly. Had the Slant Fin rep out and everything.

    He just made murmuring sounds...

In the last one, the manual had been changed(!). Now it calls for a 3" header!

Which I see you have. Maybe that is what it takes. Shame on Slant Fin for the years of 2-1/2" manuals, and keep us posted if the 3" solves the problem.

    Though I am still skeptical.

For a gas power burner I favor the Weil SGO. Weil supports it, and it works fine. Though there is only one supply tapping in the two smallest sizes.

Thanks, Ryan. We've done some SGOs too. It depends on the job and the piping situation. We have a couple W-Ms going into a church starting next week- a BIG project- and one is an SGO-6. I promise you we'll take some pics. That reminds me- gotta recharge the camera.

Piping is everything on steam, especially when they give you such a big tapping. This is a TR-30, 154 MBH input and 408 square feet of radiation. We'd never think of piping one in less than 3". We've repiped a couple "oil company specials" in 3" and the difference was huge.

One thing that's changed recently is the addition of baffles that hang between the sections. These get the stack temp down noticeably, which improves these boilers' performance. You can get baffles to upgrade older Intrepids from S/F, and we have done so. Next time you see one, pull the smoke pipe and look inside. Also on these jobs, check the draft. There's not much internal resistance in an Intrepid so excessive draft will pull the heat right out of them.

Nice job guys, always a pleasure to see craftsman take pride in their work.

I looked pretty good and did not notice anything that I would have done differently. I was about to suggest a a union of some sort on the relief valve, but I believe I saw one. Are you at all concerned with the steel plate (tank-less option I assume) on the front leaking or have they finally figured out how to prevent gasket leaks?

I think you’re thinking of the galaxy @New England SteamWorks. I learned the hard way that I will never install one again. The intrepid is built like a tank though. I installed one recently with s Beckett gas burner. Nice job as always @Gordo, although I’ll always favor the drop header

@Danny Scully that header is bigger than some I see on commercial boilers here in DC lol. That's awesome.
    Never stop learning.

Well, I am. But I thought they were the same thing with a different name? Galaxy/Intrepid.

No the galaxy is designed as a gas boiler, it’s not wet base. The blocks are completely different. I agree with you on the galaxy (coil version). They are a nightmare, no way to skim and really seem to be designed more as a hot water boiler. The intrepid, however, is a well built steam boiler.

@New England SteamWorks @Danny Scully The Intrepid does have a steel plate on the front where a coil would go. We make sure we tighten the bolts when we install or service these boilers.

@EBEBRATT-Ed : Re: drop headers- because this boiler has one nice three inch outlet and is only a three section, it doesn't really need a drop header.

But I get what you mean aesthetically; they do look a bit odd from a certain point of view. However, it simply can't be ignored that they speed up installations by overcoming the discrepancies in the boiler tappings, fittings, nipples etc and then continue to work wonderfully in producing drier steam, so aesthetics can be altered in the mind's eye and thus they become, mirabile dictu, a thing of beauty and glory.
