Utica SSC Buffer Tank Add...

john p_2
john p_2 Member Posts: 367
Just completed my buffer tank add to my system. While it was down I added a S&R zone for possible radiant zone in the kitchen, replaced hand made cush clamps, re-piped water feed to the boiler and cleaned most copper/brass piping & fittings then sprayed with high temp clear coat.

The diamond plate is nice but a pain when soldering - any flux or solder that hit it take the finish away immediately.

Pipe, fittings & hardware prices are really getting crazy...I even considered doing all vent & relief piping for the buffer tank in stainless steel which I probably c
ould've saved 30%+ versus using brass - but aesthetics mean a lot to me!

Many thanks to John Langan and Rich McGrath for their design & help with this all the way thru. Thanks to Jason from Utica for taking time to visit and resetting my boiler control.

    Bob ,

Cause was faulty flame sensor . Jason M came with the newly designed sensor and everything has been fine since . He also installed a new board and raised the minimum fan speed

Awesome looking install. I might have a pic of it blown up and framed and hung on my wall. I'll put a tag on it with your info.

Where did you get the plastic end caps and the white unistrut?

White unistrut I found on Craigslist originally then also saw it on eBay. I think both AD's have been removed but I know it is still for sale. It was at a sign company in Hamilton, NJ. I believe they are only 8' long but are white powder coated and were $7 or $8 each. The end caps are on eBay (best price) or places like Fastenal or Grainger. They come in different colors as well.

You can go right to the source for those caps, this company will send samples if you only need a few. I've been using aluminum strut for my display boards and product cases. Very easy to work and it stays bright. You can also get stainless and fiberglass strut.

B-Line has this clever 4 sided strut out now, it may be offered in various metals at some point also. Nice to be able to attach on any side.

Yeah they're a little bit of an older model not even sure if they still make them. I did find them with the gusset but the gusset was straight not rounded like I have. I found a guy selling two on eBay, so I guess I was lucky in order to keep it all uniform.

Cool I will keep my eye out for them in the future.

So what type of radiation are you feeding with 6 zones?

Slant Fin baseboard in the house and unit heater w/hot water coil in the garage. All stats kept at 68 degrees, no setback and gas bills last year averaged $91. Very happy...

Just check all your wiring and transformers. Does it do it with the Pc700 plugged in only or?
  • john p_2

No, the PC-700 hasn't been programed.

Todd from ECR has contacted me and believes the flickering light may be a bad light.

Also, I just installed an new expansion tank and insulated the sensors strapped to the S&R piping. Cable connecting the boiler reset and the zone control panel has been installed and encased in vinyl flex tubing....other than the quarry tile I believe the system is complete.

The flickering light is common I have about a dozen of these units out there and the green power light flickers on all of them.

Aaron, thanks. It appears to be getting dimmer & dimmer as time goes by. Almost no light now. Have you ever seen them completely out, not lit at all? Doesn't affect boiler operating if it does go out does it?
