Watching the news tonight. A lady decides to fix her own water heater and removes the main shut off valve by mistake? How do you do that and not think to put it back on...Made for a pretty good fire....Call a pro folks..It's much safer that way...

Many years ago a neighbor asked me to look at some work he was doing on his 1920 four square because he wasn't sure what to do next. He had removed a 14 ft center load bearing wall and was wondering why the second story floor joists were overlapped and how to brace them.

I told him he had better get a header and some supports up before the whole house collapsed on to of him, and to keep the wife and kids out of the house till it was in place.

I think the only thing holding it up was **** luck.

Sadly we think of this as a Darwin award. Reality is maybe that person could just not afford to hire a professional.

A neighbor had a leaking hot water heater but I didn't want to replace it because, with her, I would be responsible for it and everything within a five foot radius forever. Told her I wasn't licensed...gas line...dangerous, yada, yada, yada.

Another neighbor who IS a licensed plumber charged her the going rate-which was pricey in her mind; no, it shocked me too- and it annoyed her to no end.

But I slept really well that night!

That's the biggest problem with this trade. Everyone knows what you do for a living and wants you to do them a favor.
