My father told me about this today. He was a Marine and served in Vietnam. This was indeed a tragedy.

I still can't understand why our servicemen and women aren't allowed to wear their sidearms on base or at these facilities...

Good question, I am sure they have their reasons. Along those same lines I have taken my father to the Marine corps museum in Quantico on 2 separate occasions. They have Marines there as docents (in plain clothes) and at least 1 uniformed Marine at the entrance to answer questions (unarmed). They use Pinkertons for security there. Please explain that one. Personally I would trust the unarmed Marine before any of those armed Pinkertons, but that's just me.

I was in Korea in the late 60's on a remote radio site about 26 miles north of Taegu, I had a 45 or a rifle with me almost all the time. The arms rack was never locked because we did not have time to look for a key if trouble found us.

In the 13 months I was over there I only saw one individual mishandle a firearm and he was the sorriest sob by the time they got through with him. He was a young kid who engaged his trigger finger before engaging his brain., luckily nobody was hurt by his stupidity The higher ups were derelict when they didn't do something about the Ft Hood shooter before he killed those people, they should have been brought before a court-martial board.

It's time to arm the troops at home so something like this can be nipped in the bud. You probably can't stop it from happening but can sure lower the casualty count.

If "they" have their reasons, "they" haven't let any of the actual military know. For reference, it is DoD Directive 5210.66 and it restricts all DoD personnel from exercising the right to bear arms while on a DoD installation unless it is expressly written into their job duties. Put forward by one Bill Clinton, in 1992.

It does not/did not/will not make me happy.

I heard the tail end of a report this evening that said that a lot of military bases were also open to the public, so they didn't want weapons exposed. Are you kidding me??? It's a freaking military base! If the civilians don't like it, don't go there! Everyone in uniform should be armed at all times.
Life wouldn't be interesting without the people. Strange rules out there.

A kid I know was in the army during Hurricane Andrew and he told me how the troops were patrolling the streets to prevent looting. They were carrying their weapons but given no ammunition! Not even an empty magazine to make it look loaded. Once the gangbangers saw this they were holding up our soldiers and stealing their M-16's. The Army's solution was to take away the M-16's and give the troops baseball bats. INSANE!

It wasn't always like this. In '68 I was serving at Ft Benning when the riots over Dr King's shooting occurred. I was CQ that night and I got a call from the colonel, he told me to break into the armory and issue M14's to the men with 2 clips of ammo each and get them over to the section.

We were going to Atlanta to help quell the riots. Just as we loaded the trucks with men the call came to stand down because the NG had managed to quell most of the looting and arson.

Actually, it's been quite good. If not for a backwards 19th century Senate, all of that Hope may actually have become change.

My apologies. And you are correct, the directive was issued during the Bush administration, not the Clinton administration,

I would point out that the directive -- whoever issued it is quite irrelevant -- does exist and that it now applies to all military personnel, not just the Army, unless they are MPs or Shore Patrol.

And I'm sorry if I offend on this, but it makes absolutely no sense to me that a civilian, even a civilian LEO, with a month or two of training (if that) can carry an ostentatious cannon around, dressed in level 2 body armor, and arrive and depart in an armored vehicle and in general looks as though he or she just came off a patrol in 'Stan, while a Marine Gunnery Sergeant cannot.

Perhaps I am paranoid, but it strikes me as slightly odd that our civilian authorities clearly cannot trust either our sworn military or the civilian population, and finds it necessary to have heavily armed police.
