Taco 5000-2 Mixing Valve

I'm currently installing this mixing valve on a DHW line at the water heater and I can't get the water temperature above 100 degrees.  I've followed the instructions and I'm on my second valve with the same results.   I've taken the valve apart and it's clean.

Any ideas?

Alan

Edit:  I've followed the instructions except I've not installed a "flow control".  Is this the problem?  I can control the flow at the faucet and even at low flow rates, I can't get an increase in temperature.
8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

    tank output temperature?

and what about the cold supply temperature? Check the spec there is usually a min. temperature between hot water inlet and mixed water outlet temperature for the valve to work properly.

Is it a tankless heater or ?? Mixers and tankless don't always get along so well.

No lead body, of course for CA.

Hot supply must be 25F hotter than mixed output.

For the 5120 Taco valve, the hot supply must be 25F hotter than the mixed output.

I have another mixer valve (Lawler) whter the hot must be 15F hotter than the output setting. Neither of these seem to specify how cold the cold supply needs to be, but it must be quite a bit below the desired output setting. I would guess at least 10F below.

Most small sized valves like this need at least 1/2 gpm flow rate to regulate temperatre properly.
  • This is a

    tank-type water heater.

The spec's. on the mixing valve are:

Maximum hot water inlet temp. - 210 degrees (actual is 140-150)

Minimum cold water inlet temp. - 39 degrees (actual is 45-50)

    Outlet water temp. range: 85 - 150

Minimum temp. differential (between hot water supply and outlet - 20 degrees
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

  • All is good!

As it turns out, there is no problem with the mixing valve.  I had forgotten to install a check valve in the Taco X-Pump Block, cold water was flowing up the return, through the XPB, up the supply and reducing the temperature of the hot water going into the mixing valve.

Thank you Hot Rod and JDB for your time and your help.

    more about mixers

Tune in July 21 at noon CST. Julius Ballanco, engineer extraordinaire will host our webinar on thermostatic mixing valve use and piping. When you pipe a recirc into a 3 way mixer there are some important details with check valves, bypass and balancing that is important to assure accurate mix temperature conditions.
