Actually, I don't earn a buck and a half a minute standing in line at the supply house...I lose the oppurtunity to GROSS that much solving somebodies heating issues. And, I do try not to go off on the counter help, although frustration does seep out from time to time. And, I cannot become a retailer in the common sense of the term...the regional rep will not sell to me direct, because he is sworn to protect the interest of the supply house...in other words, I have to buy my brand specific materials from the local supply house that happens to "carry" the brand...even if they don't happen to "have it in stock" but can "have it here tomorrow"...probably.

Don't get me wrong...or the other frustrated men who have posted here on this topic, (and remember that the original poster asked for it!!!), I appreciate the guys at the local supply house...the decisions on stock levels are made someplace else a long ways from here because it is a national name.

I did serve some time on that side of the counter...One tip that I will pass on to the counter guys that might chance to read this...treat every contractor that comes to your counter like he's your next employer.

Joel, What you left out about your story, is that the distributer stepped up and sent you a whole new furnace, when it became apparent that the OEM manufacturer, couldn't supply the replacement in time. It may be frustrating when these problems occur, but to blame your suppliers for not having everything you need is unrealistic. What do you do on a Saturday or Sunday service call?
