Hello,

I am looking to replace my gas hot water boiler (not steam). It lasted about 37 years, but it is leaking underneath I am assuming it is the block either way it is almost 40 years so time to replace.

I do realize and it has been said many times on this forum the most important aspect is the installation which I am getting a licensed plumber to do.

There has been some post on this topic below but I have some other questions as well.

LOOKING FOR YOUR VOTE:

The information I am looking to gather from you is would you purchase the Peerless or the Weil McLain see details below.

MAJOR QUESTION WEILMCLAIN IN THE PAST VS TODAY PUSH NIPPLES:

I know WeilMclain have a good reputation my neighbor has 1 that is 40 years old. However in the past they used to use metal push nipples. However, now

They are Building the units with Synthetic elastomer (often EPDM or similar high-temp rubber).

Peerless on the other hand use Metal Cast Iron Push Nipples.

PEERLESS BENFITS AND CONCERNS:

I had 35 years of good service with the boiler.

I was going to replace it with the Peerless MI-X-03 (I am leaning more toward this.

The Weil Mclain replacement equivalent Weil-McLain CGa-3 (or CGa-3-PIDN) the thing I do not like about the Weil Mclain besides the nonmetal push nipples is it has an electronic board on it. The Peerless seems to be simpler.

PROBLEMS:

A plumber said peerless was sold and they had different owners and some units have problems recalls does anyone know of this.

ACCESSIBLITY OF PARTS.

The downside with the Peerless is I had a call about 10 places to find

someone that had 1. That concerns me what I thought I must get parts.

Eh? At least some Weil-McClains have used elastomeric gaskets between sections for years (EG the -80 series in steam). without them being the cause of problems — provided, as always, that they are assembled correctly.

@Jamie Hall Thank you!! I just wonder 10 or 20 years from now if they will last I would think metal push nipples are better but I could be wrong.

FWIW, I see quite a few older W-M CG series boilers and they seem to hold up well.

Cedric is one such critter — and is 16 years young and going strong. I might point out that the gaskets in question are very well protected, so most environmental hazards for gaskets can't even get at them, never mind hurt them.

Metal push mipples can and do rust out. There's no magic bullet.

Pick the boiler that matches the heating load the best. Peerless or Weil McLain are both fine.

In my findings, the WM boiler will almost always outlast the gaskets.
