A small garter snake got into the house and before I could deal with it it escaped into the cold air return!

So any thoughts as how to deal with this?

Yikes!

leave it be, it will find a way out. They are harmless creature. May even help with any bug problems

The snake will very likely come out the opening it entered through or one of the other returns if there are other returns. Keep an eye on them and when you see the snake coming out cover the return and catch the snake. It will poop on you but that's about all you can do aside from dismantling all the returns.

Garter snakes are quite harmless — to you ad your house. To bugs and small rodents and the like, not so much. Welcome it!

I do suggest you find it before your wife does!
