Changing Beckett AC relay and a new transformer

The Beckett AC relay has been making a funny noise while it's running the oil burner. The burner will cycle on and off frequently even when the room is way below the set temperature. If I tap on the relay it will turn the burner back on, so it really seems like I need to replace the relay. I ordered the Beckett 51950U AC ready kit. I see it comes with a 40v transformer. The transformer I currently have on the burner is 24v connected to a Beckett Genisys 7505 control.

Should I put the new 40v one on the burner or just stick with the old 24v? Can I cause any problems going up to the 40v? If it matters, I also have a very old round Thermo pride thermostat.

Are you quite sure that that transformer is 40 Volts (40 V) —or it it 40 Volt Amperes (40 VA)? That is not a trivial difference! If it's 40 Volts and you swap it ono the existing burner controls, you'll likely fry everything.

(i'm assuming it is 40va since 40va is the common size of 24vac hvac xfrmr.)

I got a better look at the old and new one and it turns out they are the same. 40va on the 24vac.

    Then you'll be fine.

Does it pay to put a new transformer or just change the relay?

If the old transformer is the same rating and is putting out 24 volts or so, leave it be. Transformers either work or they don't.
