Normally boiler shuts off at 67F. Now, it's running until 69F. What changed?

Options

I know specific degrees do not matter. It's all relative, etc.

My $15 digital thermometer is located across the room from the thermostat. Thermostat in living room. Works great. Normally boiler shuts off at 67F. Now, it's running until 69F. What changed? Does cold snap somehow affect? Thermostat has not been touched all winter.

If you want to verify if the thermostat is reading temp. correctly then you need to locate that digital thermometer right next to (but not obstructing the airflow to) your thermostat.

Edit to add - One of the best things I have done is to add a remote temperature sensor which I located in a different location of my 1st floor, away from the thermostat. I am much more comfortable with the thermostat averaging that remote sensor input with it's own internal one.

Edit to add - I bought one of these wireless temperature/humidity sensors a few years ago (price is $2 higher but it is still cheap) and have it parked right on top of my WR digital thermostat. There is an app on my phone that gives me a graph of the days temperature reading and no matter where I am I can monitor what the temperature is to see if my thermostat is doing a good job or if there is a problem with my boiler and if the thermostat is being honest. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CHRZ26GM?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_0_1&th=1

Heat loss through the walls, floors and ceilings changes as the outside temperature changes. The lower the outside temp the more drafts and variations in temp you will get. In New England we have had several mornings of below design temps.

What does the boiler tridicator temp reading say? I know that it is room temp you are concerned about. Get an auxiliary accurate thermostat and place it next to the room thermostat and compare temps.

What make of room thermostat? Some makes of mercury thermostats get out of whack.

What make and model thermostat? Its possible the anticipator or CPH is not correct and it's overshooting during the cold spell.

You're getting the temperature readings from the digital thermometer? How close is the thermometer to a heat emitter? Does the thermostat show 67° when it shuts off?

It's not about the actual temperature.

Normally, my boiler shuts off at X degrees.

Now, it's shutting off at X+2 degrees

    I never touched the thermostat.

@EBEBRATT-Ed might be onto something. The wall with the thermostat might be getting colder than usual, relative to the digital thermometer across the room, with deep freeze, so boiler is running longer,

Thermostats should be on an internal wall. The hole in the wall that the wires come out of behind the thermostat, I always stuff with fibre glass insulation to keep the cooler air in the wall cavity from acting with upon the thermostat.

Had this issue with wall mount thermostat (even an internal wall) so now with an Ecobee thermostat rely totally on a remote sensor that sits on a piece of furniture internal to the room. Even the internal walls on this 1890 home can be drafty.

Just an observation, but as outdoor temps drop in my single pipe steam, my heating system seems to operate even better to heat the house. In my case, after the heating cycle ends, the temperature rises about two degrees naturally. This is followed by the temp slowly decreasing to set temp. to begin next cycle

I dont pretend to understand the physics behind it, but it works for me

could be overshooting due to higher pressure in the system (which raises the temperature above 212) and all fully hot radiators at the end of the call for heat

Radiators continue to heat the room after the boiler shuts off. On mild days the thermostat may shut the boiler off at set temperature with the radiators ~50% fille. On cold days it may do same with raidators will to 90% or 100%. The more filled raidators will heat the room more in their process of cooling leading to more overshoot. This of course is different from the issue of the thermostat not shutting off the boiler until real room temperature has already overshot which would be related to the thrmostat location.
