Boiler Feed Water location?

As I try to visualize the piping I have a question as to where to locate the boiler water fill? I see some that are above the pressure tank but I don't want to redo that area. Can I just pick a location and plumb it accordingly?

Pretty much… sort of. Ideally it would tie in very near the expansion tank, and the pressure regulating valve would be right there as well. However… the one thing you DON'T wand is to have much head loss or gain between where it hooks in and the expansion tank. In particular, you want it — and the expansion tank — on the suction side of any pumps in the system.

most hook it to the expansion tnk but it does not have to be there. You don't want any restrictions or pressure drop between the ex tank connection and the water MU.

And make sure the expansion tank and water MU are both on the same side of the circ pump. The suction side is best.

If there are no leaks, makeup water is not needed or even wanted.

    Again thanks for the replies!

The coal stoker boiler I removed had it plumbed right into the boiler so I may do the same.

I was looking at the old pressure reducer that was on the MU line . It was an Armstrong. Is there a benefit to going g with a Calleffi? I'm not opposed to spending $ if there is value.

So a question. It has been mentioned to install on the "suction side". Would it be acceptable to plumb it in to the Return line?

The IOM will show where the manufacture wants is and how to pipe the near boiler.

As long as the pressure drop between the return and the expansion tank is minimal…

I would not use a "used" fill valve. They are notorius for leaking by after years of non use. It is probably the least expensive component on the system, go with a new one.

Connect at or near the expansion tank. The valve it self can be mounted most anywhere.
