So the new Weil-McClain boiler is sitting in the basement ready to install. The original plan was to install the SS chimney liner. But with this summer being so hot I was thinking of running the boiler for the first heating season using the terracotta lined chimney and doing the liner next Spring.

Thoughts??

Thanks!

So, it’s going to be hot for the next 90 Days?

I was thinking the same thing @pecmsg. You know… it was hot last summer too. Do you think it will be hot next summer?

As far as a terracotta lined chimney is concerned I have never seen a perfect terracotta tile completely vanish within one winter season of condensing flue gas problems. An of course if you are using the Weil McLain model 94 commercial steam boiler and the flue tiles are properly sized for the firing rate, you may be able to use that liner for years.

What Weil McLain boiler is already in your basement?

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

What does being hot have to do with the flue liner?

My house went 100 years before I put in a SS liner so I think you're OK

The reason for postponing is the ongoing exterior house staining and cedar siding repair then we will be gone for 2 months. Now maybe when I am back home in October we could do the install? Or just wait until next spring.

I think you went with a standard cast Weil boiler? If so how large is the is the lined chimney. Is it inside or outside the building?

A small BTU boiler in a large clay flue could lead to some condensation.
