We like Quiet. So....
So will a mod con boiler in the basement be heard? I'm not seeing sound ratings on any model. Maybe I am missing something?

It will not be heard.

But don't put it under the bedroom :)
Exhaust noise can be annoying, so keep that in mind for termination. I'd do whatever possible to get the vent out the roof.
Lochinvar made a model called the Cadet. It was in a 1-1/2" thick PP foam jacket. Quietest boiler I ever owned.

Mine is under the bedroom. The only this I usually hear is the condensate pump dumping…

It would be under the living room. I can hear the boiler circulator when it comes on, so I'm wondering if the exhaust vent fan would be a concern? Navien is the one I am considering as there are 2-3 service companies in our area.

You'd have to have ears like Mr. Spock!

If you're looking for near-complete silence, maybe two-pipe steam with orifices? If you use an electronic LWCO,the only moving parts are the gas valve diagram and the vaporstat armature.

My ears aren't pointy. At least I don't think so!

I cannot see how you can hear any of the pumps start. I can't hear a Taco or a Grundfos if I'm standing right next to them. Are you sure you're not hearing the fan………..now that makes a bit of noise………..especially when they are not properly balanced (most of them).

our dining room is over the boiler & never hear the Modcon boiler. I only hear as i walk down basement stairs.
We could hear the 140kbtu CI monster and 1/6 hp B&G circulator anywhere on first floor. On second floor we were entertained by clanging of pipe and radiators as the 180f water hit the 68f metal.

I hear the relays for the circulators…
I also sometimes hear the fan and the combustion. Actually sounds like a car off in the distance.

Very quiet (if) installed properly. You can find videos on the internet that show some that are very loud due to improper installations.

What part of a installation causes a noisy install?

The biggest one I have had to correct was a gas line that was too small. It made the unit make a very distinct and loud vibration sound when starting.

hoot, whoosh, resonating are all sounds possible from lack of proper set up. Check and adjust fuel pressure, set or adjust with combustion analyzer.
Proper venting, proper fuel line sizing, piped and adjusted to prevent excessive short cycling, good water quality. These are all part of a proper installation and commissioning.
