Foreign fitting (to me)

Hello all,
Attached is a photo of a fitting on a 2 pipe steam radiator. Most of the radiators in the house have the familiar (to me) return circular traps. Others have this "foreigner". Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank you

They work splendidly and are simple.
Provided you keep your pressure down. Not more than 8 OUNCES (half a pound) per square inch shutoff. You'll need a vapourstat to make this system run right.

This is an O-E Vapor system but someone replaced these original return fittings with standard traps.
