Can you run a hot water heat system with the water turned off at the main for a week or 2 if you're away?

Thanks

A closed loop system should never need water once it's established, so unless you have a terrible leak (which is a much larger issue), there is no harm in running the system with domestic water turned off. I have hundreds of systems installed out there with no connection to the domestic water at all.

Needs to have a backflow device, turn off the supply to the boiler

Yes — assuming that there is a low water cutoff on the boiler.

Most glycol systems are just a water an antifreeze system. All the ones I installed had no city water connected for make up and no glycol make up system. And I am talking systems with 6" pipe and larger.

We had emergency valve so you could fill the system with water and dilute the glycol only by intentionally attaching a hose in two places.
