Diagram on Home Depot radiator vents package
Bought my vents at plumbing supply, but was in HD for something else, and wanted to see the steam vents they carry. If HD still carries vents, there must still be steam in service.
What is (D) referring to? There is no radiator, just a pipe.
#6 = 2nd floor = .0935
#C = Attic = .1285
#D = High 2nd floor = .1850
#5 = 1st floor = .070

How does that work? Without a riser vent, the steam may never reach the 3rd floor? The riser vent helps to move more air out? The farther the radiator, the more air needs to be purged in between? Do you want far radiators to vent faster for this reason?

So many questions. A riser vent is really a variant on a main vent — just on a vertical pipe. The fundamental concept of venting is to vent the mains (and risers, if extensive) fast, to get steam to all radiators reasonably quickly and, perhaps as important, at more or less the same time.
Then you use the radiator vents to control the heat output of specific radiators.

Not TOO eventually! Pretty quick because that large vent on the riser will basically make the riser part of the main…it will let a lot of air escape before air starts wanting to push through those #4 and #5 vents…that top radiator might see steam before some others since the D vent is so close to it.
PS: never buy home depot vents

FYI, the HD brand is called "Plumber's Edge"

I always wondered what happened to Numbers 1, 2 & 3 on Gorton's numbering scheme. I even researched it in old ASHVE guides but never found an answer or a 1, 2 or 3.

4,5,6,C,D,1,2. Lowest capacity to highest capacity. Any clues to the rational behind these ratings. Nothing that it matters
