Long ago I worked at refrigeration company. Project was to defrost evaporator by pumping liquid refrigerant (not hot gas) through it. I just read that some researchers are trying same idea for heat pumps.

    Manitowoc ice makers use a cool gas for defrost.
    The idea was to limit the thermal shock.
    I don’t think it will work on a heat pump!
