elbows in basement discolored?

Posted the other day about testing pipes and if I should be worried about chasing leaks in horsehair plaster walls. Here’s pics of some pipes in basement, 11 radiators in total, 2story home. Straight Runs in basement look great(like replace in this century), but elbows/pipes at basement boards I see much more corrosion.
Not getting cheap replacement quotes, so no deal here, but won’t guarantee pipes either. I love the look and feel of steam but should I just abandon for baseboard, can’t afford chasing pipe leaks.
Current gas furnace has not been working for many years and already scrapped. It’s cold in NE so really need a decision soon. Anyone in RI that is on this feed?

Surface rust. They do... I don't see a problem, at least in the pictures you show.

And don't even think about changing from steam to hot water. For lots of reasons...

Take your time, get the EDR of the current radiators to properly size the replacement boiler

After you install the new boiler, try scraping the rust off with a wire brush. Then use some silver paint on those elbows. They will look like new.

After you make that expensive repair and you still have the same problem, What will you check next?

112 years old and a little paint about 60 years ago. ;)
