I am relatively new to the site here and am very impressed with the great steam heat information y'all have here. Everything a guy needs all in one place. I have an old fuel oil furnace, it's been very reliable, but I've got a Bell & Gossett Series 100 making some unholy sounds. Can anyone recommend a boiler furnace contractor here in Northern Virginia? I'm really up a creek here..... TIA
Mark

May be the coupler which is a pretty easy fix and make a hell of a racket when the spring breaks

Or may need to be oiled.

Reach out to RK Payne in King George, they are small, reliable and local.

Robert B Payne is not the same company; they are much larger and work Stafford and north. .

Post a picture of the boiler, pump and a closeup of the coupler located in the narrow section between the motor and the pump assembly.

I’m an engineer, not a HVAC contractor but send me a PM if you get stuck.

Thanks all to replied to this, very impressive. I've been looking at the repair parts for the B&G 100s, I'm not sure which one of the three pieces I need. I ain't afraid to try it, I just don't want to go past the dry side. See photos above, the boiler there and the Becket fuel system, all works pretty well, no leaks, no noises, Ive swapped out a couple of stuck bleeders, nothing major in 6 years. See the circ pump? See the fine metal shavings? Makes me think the mounts have sagged like I've read here, but others say it's the spring coupler. Thoughts? What would you do PC7060? I'm a telecomm guy by trade, networks and radios, so this is outta my lane, but we're in a 300 yo farmhouse so everything is my lane now. I think I could take it apart (of course) if I knew which piece to replace. RK Panye is worth a call here I think. Thanks all. Standing by...

The wiring to that pump is not up to code and is downright dangerous.
    That needs immediate attention!

I would replace that B& G circulator. The cost of repair parts usually make it more worthwhile to just change the circulator. B& G repair parts are $$$.

But before you do that. Take a 1/8" Allen wrench and remove the coupling and check and see if the coupling is ok. You have to remove the motor to do this it's just 4 1/4" bolts. The springs sometimes break. Then run the motor without it being connected to the pump shaft. If the motor is ok and the pulp shaft turns ok by hand and no water is leaking from the shaft seal get a new coupling and reassemble.
Also oil the bearing assembly and motor. Get the B & g oil the same place you get the pump coupling. Either a local supply house or you can order it from supply house.com.

When you put thee motor back on buy some 3/8" or 1/2" greenfield (flexible metallic conduit) and a couple of connectors and put those wires in the conduit. Those wire could short out the way they are installed and the motor is ungrounded without the greenfield.

    @EBEBRATT-Ed
Thanks brother. That's exactly what I needed to hear. Very clear.
So do you think a spring broke and that's the metal flakes? That's what I get from your focus on the coupler.
Are you suggesting that I run the motor uncoupled in order to diagnose a motor problem (metal flakes coming from somewhere/something in motion)... If the motor has a internal rub then replace it, right?

Roger all on the greenfield, and thanks for throwing that in. I could see from previous pics that my thing didn't match the others, I looked it up and have that on hand now. Sort of secondary to getting the unit up before ol man winter arrives....
Many thanks, as you sew, so shall you reap.

And replace the motor mounts. Bad mounts probaby caused this failure.

Be sure cut the power off to the boiler before you work on the circulator.

Big place, how much land do you have?  I friend of mine has an old plantation house in KG off 218.

Just keeping the house painted and the grass mowed must be a bit of work.

16 acres sir, two six acre fields with a 4 acre house and yard in the middle. It's been a real journey. Retired out of military and subdivisions into historical old house way out in the stix. I learn something everyday. Thanks again for the guidance. RK Payne is coming tomm at 8, I'll send an update. Motor and/or spring coupler replacement is my guess...

RK Payne (Ben) came in yesterday and swapped the spring coupler, it frosted last night (hard) and we're nice n toasty inside this morning. All is good again. Thanks for the references and the great advice. Scheduling a service and tune-up, I'm fascinated to learn more. Love the experience levels here and the good reading.  Thanks all

Tell them they'll get a lot more work if they advertise on the "Find a Contractor" page of this site.
